Are you planning a Walt Disney World vacation this fall? Well get ready to be part of history! On October 1st, 2021 Walt Disney World resort will celebrate its Golden year, the 50th anniversary! Sure to be a much bigger celebration than any other anniversary we have seen. Walt Disney World officially opened on October 1st, 1971. The original opening included Magic Kingdom and 2 hotels, the Contemporary Resort Hotel and Polynesian Village Resort.

Magic Kingdom 1971

At the opening of Magic Kingdom, there were only 19 attractions available to experience. Out of those 19 attractions, Prince Charming Regal Carrousel (originally called Cinderella’s Golden Carousel), Country Bear Jamboree, Dumbo The Flying Elephant, Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade, Tomorrowland Speedway (originally called Grand Prix Raceway), The Hall of Presidents, The Haunted Mansion, It’s a Small World, Jungle Cruise, Mad Tea Party, Swiss Family Treehouse, Enchanted Tiki Room (originally called Tropical Serenade), and the Walt Disney World Railroad remain today.

Today, Magic Kingdom now has over 60 rides, shows and more for guests to experience. It’s the main park that guests have come to love and must experience on their trip. Can you even say you have been to Walt Disney World if you haven’t visited Magic Kingdom park?

“The World’s Most Magical Celebration” will begin on October 1st, 2021 and will last through 18 months! This is great news for those that want to experience it, but aren’t yet comfortable traveling until next year. We will be visiting in October this year, and in September next year so we will experience it twice! The long celebration will also allow Disney to come through with some of the experiences and restaurants that were expected to open for the 50th but are having delays due to the closure. Here are some of the things we know are coming in the next 18 months: Space 220, a new restaurant at Epcot, Harmonious, a new nighttime show at Epcot, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, a new attraction at Epcot, Roundup Rodeo BBQ, a new restaurant in Hollywood Studios, Tron: Lightcycle Power Run, a new attraction at Magic Kingdom, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a new attraction at Epcot, Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, a new interactive experience at Epcot, a new Epcot entrance, a new Play Pavilion at Epcot, Princess and the Frog Reimagining of Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom and so much more! You can read more about the upcoming attractions, experience and restaurants at the Disney Parks Blog.

During the Summer last year, Cinderella’s Castle received a royal makeover with a brighter pink and a royal purple. We really weren’t that crazy about the new look when looking at the images that were coming out. BUT, when we visited back in November, it really was truly stunning and it’s really growing on me. It looks as if it has faded some since its initial paint job which is probably why they painted it so brightly to begin with. Another stage in the makeover is coming for the 50th and as you can see, it’s perfect for the new color scheme “EARidescence” with a lot of new decorations that will shimmer and sparkle all day and into the night. Cinderella’s castle will feature golden bunting and a 50th anniversary crest. At night, the castle will include pixie dust and seem to sparkle.

Don’t think the enhancements will only take place at Magic Kingdom, the other 3 parks will also experience special new lighting and special touches. There will be magical fireflies inhabiting the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and special new touches coming to life on the Hollywood Tower Hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Mickey and Minnie 50th Anniversary

We also know that Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, will have sparkling new looks, dressed for the special occasion in custom-made EARidescent fabric with gold highlights.

While we don’t have ALL the details of this 18 month long celebration, we are excited to see all that will be taking place and the ongoing release of information over the next few months. Once of the biggest hints is Epcot preparing for Harmonious! There is a lot of information leading to the debut of this nighttime spectacular by October! Stay tuned for more information to come.
