Become a Disney Travel Agent

Why are you here?

First, let’s start by asking the question, “How did you get here?” What made you search How to Become a Disney Travel Agent? Maybe you love Disney, maybe you love planning and the details. Maybe you are already the go-to person with family or friends that are planning their trip to Disney. Whatever the case may be, you are in the right place!

Let’s start by adjusting the term “Disney Travel Agent”. That term suggests that we work for Disney, which is generally not the case. The actual terminology is “a travel agent specializing in Disney”. Why a Disney Vacation Specialist you may ask? Disney isn’t just a theme park. It is an entire world of experience with its unique attractions and locations such as The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disneyland Resort, Aulani Resort in Hawaii, Disney Cruise Lines, and many more. Armed as a Disney specialist, you will be equipped to plan the perfect dream vacations for Disney fans no matter where they want to go.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into the exciting realm of becoming a Disney Vacation Specialist.

Finding the Right Agency

The first step to becoming a Disney specialist is finding the right agency. In order to sell travel, you either have to obtain your own licensing and business structure or work under another agency (this is called a host agency). A host agency holds the licensing and has already built relationships with suppliers, and it is a lot easier and less expensive for you to get started than setting up your own agency from scratch.

My caution when it comes to researching agencies … do your homework. Researching agencies isn’t just Googling ‘disney travel agency’ – it’s about understanding the ethos, commission structure, training programs, resources and support provided by these agencies.

Being a Disney Vacation Specialist is definitely fun and rewarding, but it is a job, and it takes time to learn all of the ins and outs of the Disney Destinations, not to mention the back-end office duties of entering, tracking and planning a vacation from start to finish. You want to ensure that you get training and support throughout the entire process to set you up for success.

Understanding the commission splits is also really important. As a travel agent, it’s how you will earn your income. Different agencies offer different splits – some might offer a flat rate, while most offer a tiered structure based on sales volume. Typically, commission splits start at 50/50 and go up from there. Generally, a higher split means less support, while a lower split comes with more support and resources. Some agencies also allow you to choose to pay a higher monthly fee in order to receive a higher commission split. Choose based on your needs and preferences.

Avoid the Scams

An unfortunate part of any industry, travel included, is the presence of scams. This is especially true in the ‘work from home’ market. You do not want to invest money or time in something only to find out it isn’t what it was promised to be. Here are some tips to safeguard yourself:

  • Research every agency: check their online presence, customer reviews, and Better Business Bureau ratings (not every business is accredited with the BBB, but if they are, you want to make sure they have a good rating)
  • Analyze their contracts: Look for hidden fees or unusually high splits in commission
  • Training and Resources: A legitimate agency will provide proper training and resources for agents.
  • Avoid agencies that require you to bring in other agents. This is a common trait of MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) structures, not legitimate travel agencies.

Expanding Horizons: Specializing Beyond Disney

When choosing an agency to join as a travel advisor specializing in Disney vacations, it’s essential to consider the option of expanding your expertise to other destinations. While your primary focus may be on Disney vacations, it’s highly likely that clients who experience the magic of Disney will return for future travel adventures to different destinations.

By selecting an agency that allows you the flexibility to specialize in multiple destinations, you have the ability to continue serving your Disney clients as they return to you for their future travel needs. It’s all about building trust and providing exceptional service that keeps clients coming back for more magical adventures, regardless of the destination.

Questions to Ask

Lastly, here are some questions to ask so that you can determine if the agency is the perfect fit for you:

  • What kind of training and ongoing support are offered?
  • What is the commission split and how often are commissions paid?
  • What kind of marketing tools and resources are provided?
  • Are there any sales requirements or requirements to bring in other agents?
